Quick Read: The West Midlands clinches a £4 million grant to boost 5G technology across vital sectors—manufacturing and smart communities. This funding aims to revolutionize productivity, wellness, and jobs, supported by key players including WM5G and Jaguar Land Rover. Designated a 5G Innovation Region, the West Midlands gears up to scale digital advancements, addressing industry challenges and sparking widespread organizational benefits.
In a triumphant win, the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) has secured a £4 million grant aimed at accelerating the integration of 5G technology across the region's vital clusters – manufacturing and smart communities (encompassing social care & housing). This significant funding, obtained through a collaborative bid from WM5G, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), and WMCA's Local Authority partners, is part of the Government's £40 million initiative to drive the transformative impact of advanced connectivity and digital technologies.
Identified as key clusters in the West Midlands Plan for Growth, these sectors serve as catalysts to reignite the regional economy post-Covid, leveraging Industry 4.0 technologies such as 5G, data, and AI. This initiative aims to generate skilled jobs, enhance productivity, revolutionize wellness, and address social disparities. Despite the potential, limited digital adoption persists due to underlying skill gaps, cost issues, and various barriers to awareness, proposition, funding, and delivery.
Being designated as a 5G Innovation Region empowers the West Midlands to surmount these challenges by scaling proven use cases through the UK's inaugural adoption hubs in operational manufacturing and social housing facilities. These hubs will pave the way for widespread organizational benefits through adoption programs, heralding a new era of digital advancement and empowerment.
Minister of Data and Digital Infrastructure Sir John Whittingdale expressed that this new fund will give local areas from across the country the opportunity to be at the forefront of Britain’s world-leading 5G revolution.
Mayor of the West Midlands and WMCA Chair Andy Street emphasized on accelerating digital adoption is at the heart of our regional strategy to drive prosperity as we continue to bounce back from the impact of the pandemic.
Steve Prendergast, Digital Operations Director at JLR, highlighted the significance of 5G in JLR's digital transformation, especially in the production of next-gen electric vehicles.
Cllr Saima Suleman of Birmingham City Council stressed the transformative potential of 5G technologies in improving services for residents, staff, and partners.
Cllr Duggins, Leader of Coventry City Council, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the collective regional effort to seize the opportunities presented by 5G-powered technologies.
This substantial grant and regional collaboration herald a new era of digital evolution and empowerment for the West Midlands, paving the way for groundbreaking advancements in various sectors.

West Midlands Poised to Lead UK’s AI Revolution, Says KPMG Partner

Private firms in the West Midlands are outpacing the rest of the UK in their plans to adopt artificial intelligence (AI), positioning the region at the forefront of digital innovation, according to KPMG’s Andy Bostock.
With the UK Government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan aiming to cement the country as a global leader in artificial intelligence, the West Midlands is already taking significant steps in that direction. The plan, launched earlier this year, highlights how AI can modernise public services — and private sector companies across the region are responding to the call with enthusiasm.
According to KPMG’s Private Enterprise Barometer, published in December, 83% of West Midlands private firms are planning AI investments — well above the national average of 73%.
Andy Bostock, Senior Partner at KPMG, said:
“The most successful companies are those viewing AI not as a cost, but as a strategic investment in long-term growth and resilience.”
The West Midlands, with its strong roots in engineering and manufacturing, is well-positioned to reap the benefits of AI. From optimising supply chains to enhancing talent acquisition and predictive maintenance, AI applications are already transforming business models.
A recent joint report by KPMG and UKTN found that accelerating AI adoption across manufacturing and engineering will be essential to meet the region’s tech sector goal of reaching a £100 billion valuation by 2030.
The region is home to over 300 AI-focused businesses employing more than 11,000 people, forming one of the most dynamic digital clusters in the UK. Yet, Bostock stressed that the journey is just beginning.
To fully harness AI’s potential, businesses must establish strong, adaptable data frameworks and integrate AI solutions that align with their existing operations. This includes practical tools like chatbots for customer service, predictive analytics for inventory management, and AI-driven insights for marketing and long-term planning.
Andy Bostock added:
“Real business value comes from identifying where AI can enhance existing strengths. It’s not about starting over, it’s about getting smarter.”
As the region doubles down on digital transformation, Bostock believes cutting through the AI hype and focusing on measurable outcomes will be key to unlocking its full potential.
